Sans son sceau, le document perd toute sa valeur diplomatique : fixé au document, il tient lieu de signature (le signataire qui appose son sceau est appelé sigillant). Le sceau ne doit pas être considéré isolément mais dans l’ensemble qu’il forme avec le document et son mode d’attache.
