French term or phrase: fût
What does this term mean when it is talking about a fountain? as in
Son fût est surmonté d'un lion tenant

I originally thought it meant the basin of the fountain, but then I saw that referred to as a bassine in the same text.

But what does it look like?

Explanation:
The fût de fontaine in this case, in the town of Argeliers, is a wine barrel!

And here it's a square ..... what I'd call a base or support or plinth:

Description : Fût de fontaine mouluré de plan carré supportant une statue en fonte de fer au centre d' un bassin en pierre de plan circulaire ; bouches d' eau sur les faces principale et arrière du fût

Here we have a "plinth column fountain":

Here whe have a shaft on a plinth base:

A monumental verdigris patinated garden fountain. Two tiers, scalloped graduated circular basin, the shaft surrounded by frolicking putti upon a plinth base.

The 7ft statue of the Greek god of love Eros at Sefton Park was a replica of the one in Piccadilly Circus in London.
But a combination of wear and tear from the elements and vandalism mean it had to be removed in the early 90s and was put in a city museum.
The original remains in The Conservation Centre but a replacement was returned to its FOUNTAIN PLINTH.
Before they could restore the fountain to its former glory they had to repair the BASE.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a photo of this particular fountain.

neutral  B D Finch: A case of the "singes"? Should a generic term be sought in English, e.g. "riser"? However, "riser" isn't generally used in the context of fountains as far as I know.

-> Singes? Nothing burnt here! There might (or not) be a generic term. "Fût" may apply in one case, "colonne" or "base" in another in French in any case.

shaft

Explanation:
In French, when describing a traditional circular fountain, "fût" designates the central part of the fountain, that more or less looks like a column, and from which, most of the time, water is forced in the air (see first link below with a photograph and a description including the word "fût").
This part is called "shaft" in English, and is often toped with a sculptured ornament (like a lion in your source text). See second link below with a picture and a description with the word "shaft").
