Vidim ze debata pokracuje. Prokop, vas text v angl. jazyku je presne to co som napisala hned na zaciatku ked mi nebolo jasne o aky kabinet sa jedna. Precitajte si vsetky odpovede, dabatu, prispevky. Mozno vam pomoze ak si vypisete "kabinet", kabinety a vyskocia moznosti. Uncle sa pytal na kabinet chemie, prirodopisu, zemepisu atd.; z coho mi bolo jasnejsie ze to moze byt aj ucebna pre studentov/ziakov. Teda nielen miestnost popri zborovni ale miestnost kde sa ucitel pripravi..., zavola studenta na predebatovanie (priprava na SOČ-ku atd.), ale aj na odkladanie pomocok, ako sme sa dozvedeli az teraz. Moderne a zmodernizovane skoly maju priestory- kabinety, popri triedach, pre prakticku cast, precvicovanie uciva a nemusi to byt len chemia, biologia ale aj jazyky, zemepis, dejepis a pod. www.zsslovanpb.edu.sk/kabinet (elektronicky kabinet zemepisu), www.gy.svitavy.cz/kabinety (velmi moderna skola). Skuste si tiez vypisat "teacher's office, teachers office, office staff a pod. Len na doplnenie, viem o com pisem, ale tak ako napisal Gerry neexistuje "global word" ako napr. "obec", hoci aj na to je odpoved, ked vieme aka je definicia v geografii pre vyraz "obec".

I agree with Prokop.
I would still say staff room, as I grew up in the system and I think I have a pretty good idea about the language used. However, 'Teacher's office' is only ever used in conjunction with 'Head teacher's office' (at least in the UK), and by its very definition a 'study room' is for the use of students only. I have never heard of 'laboratory' being used in this context, but you are free to choose whichever one you like!

...staff room is a better term for zborovna.
By the way here's a little clarification from the writer of my source text: "Kabinet je miestnost, kde su ulozene knihy a ucebne pomocky pre dany predmet."

Thanks, Uncle, I'm absolutely OK with that, it's always up to you to choose what suits your needs best :) I just wanted to comment on the chosen answer. For "zborovna" I like Gerry's "staff room". But again, that's just the way I feel it.

I'm sorry, though I liked your suggestion the best (at first), I cannot go with "teacher's office". The first thing that comes to mind when I read/hear it is "zborovna".

IMHO, laboratories and study rooms are places where students work or study (laboratoř, studovna). On the other hand, kabinet is a room where teachers spend their free time (breaks, time before/after classes) and where they keep some of their stuff (aids, etc.). If a teacher asks a student to follow him/her into his/her kabinet, it is the teacher's office they are going to. Definitely not a laboratory or a study room.

Even within the UK there is no global word! It is like the discussion about 'obec' - there is no one 'right' answer, and you could make anything up that sounds feasible :)

Thanks, Gerry, zborovna-miesto pre ucitelsky zbor= sfaff room, or common-room. If school has enough space, teachers might have their extra rooms for preparation, relaxation-kabinet and for students-loboratoria= laboratory or what ever we will call it.

Uncle, neviem ci ma skusate alebo je to seriozna otazka. V kabienetoch som stravila roky a roky na vysokej skole ako aj v strednej skole. Hladate vyraz pre strednu skolu, zemepisny, chemicky, biologie, fyziky alebo kabinet fyziologie, anatomie/ VS a pod.

když to jde o základnou školu tak jednoznačně 'staff room', anebo i 'class' (aspoň v GB). Britské (státní) základní školy nemají 'departments'! Jinak se může učit zeměpis u nás na základce, na vysoké i na středné škole :)
