English term or phrase: to commit their lives together
The Lord teaches in Genesis 2:24 [AV], ‘Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall become one flesh.’ Notice here it does not say that a man shall cleave to a woman—that would justify licentious and permissive behaviour. Rather, a man is to cleave to his wife (lit.: ‘his woman’). There is a sense of belonging. There is a recognized public and legal agreement, so that all know that two people have agreed before God ***to commit their lives together***.
