Marina G., I don't think your distinction is meaningful. Either of these terms is perfectly idiomatic and okay. "Elimination" has nothing to do with "kогда такое рабочее место ВООБЩЕ становится не нужно." If a job is cut, it is eliminated--and vice versa. I would avoid "cutting" only because "сокращениe," in the first part of the sentence, would be translated as "cutting back," and it's better to vary the word--especially because the source text does. Why would you want to change it?
Marina A., about "dozens"--I wouldn't say "dozens of thousands." Dozens of eggs, yes, but not dozens of thousands. In our silly non-metric system, once you get into big numbers, "metric rocks." We don't calculate light-years in dozens (thank goodness).
