Science - Livestock / Animal Husbandry / Eel farming
Spanish term or phrase: sacrificar
I know that when it's cattle, the translation is "slaughter", but this refers to eels in an experiment:
"Una vez por semana, se sacrificaron 10 machos, obteniendo parametros morfometricos..."

agree  Roberto Hall: killed. Maybe "killed painlessly" if it were necessary to soften the expression.

  -> Thank you Roberto

agree  John Speese: I've heard sacrificed used in the context of animals killed to obtain data in research or experiments.

agree  Muriel Vasconcellos: Alas, "sacrificed" is a common euphemism in describing research using live animals. Who knows if it was painless?

-> Thanks Muriel, true who knows if it was painless

disagree  Andrée Goreux: Animals for food are slaughtered, sick pets are put down, people are killed or put to death
6 hrs
-> But these are experiment animals so they are sacrificed or killed

agree  Marcelo González: "sacrificed for research (purposes)"--not exactly an uncommon phrase/euphemism

Notes to answerer
Asker: I'd only really use this for pets, but thanks for your input and please ignore the rather snippy "disagree" there ;)

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
agree  Peter van der Hoek: Again, I agree. There are many ways of expressing this painful act.
23 mins
-> Thanks for your support, Peter. Have a nice day. :)

disagree  Andrée Goreux: Animals for food are slaughtered, in context, this is an eel farm. Sick pets are put down, put to sleep or sacrificed. People are killed in an accident or put to death for a crime.
5 hrs
-> As Mirtha points out, these are NOT animals for food; the context is a laboratory EXPERIMENT. You should read the entire entry more carefully.

slaughter

Explanation:
I would go with slaughter. For me "killed" isn't the right word here.
