relevante vs relevant 19:44 Jan 5, 2009
These are false cognates. The correct translation of relevant into Spanish is pertinente. The word relevente has a very different meaning: See the RAE definition: relevante.
(Del lat. relĕvans, -antis, part. act. de relevāre, levantar, alzar).
1. adj. Sobresaliente, destacado.
2. adj. Importante, significativo.
I know this is a common mistake and widely used, but as professional translators we should aim to use the correct terminology and avoid the lazy thinking of the media who have a great deal to answer in perpetuating such mistakes. |
