English term or phrase: Swing for the fences/bunts and singles
No caso, é beisebol.

But constantly SWINGING FOR THE FENCES does not make good sense - no when BUNTS AND SINGLES can generate robust growth.

Eu gostaria de saber o que é SWING FOR THE FENCES e BUNTS AND SINGLES.

trying to achieve something thats very unlikely to occur

Explanation:
It is indeed a baseball expression, that derives from hitting home runs -- i.e., when the ball goes "over the fence" beyond the playing field so that the batter automatically gets to circle the bases and score a run. Getting even a basehit in baseball is difficult (a .300 batting average -- three hits out of every 10 times at bat -- is considered excellent), and hitting homeruns is even more rare, and doesn't happen on demand. So "swinging for the fences" has the connotation of going for broke, of perhaps futilely or foolishly trying to achieve something that's very unlikely to occur, as opposed to batting smart by going for a single or other base hit.

fintar [e mais...]

Explanation:
"bunt" is perhaps translated as 'fintar': you're faking a move to "psych out" the other team. You tap the ball with the bat [instead of hitting it] to surprize the opposing team who think you're going to hit the ball to the outfield [where the "fences" are, in front of the spectators]. The idea is that is safe and a short term solution, and it's a surprise move.

"Swinging for the fences" means what Teresa referred to, in that, the other team might let the hit go [thinking it's heading over the fences into the stands of people] or they might not go far enough because its hard to hit the ball that far. Its what we call a "hit or miss" strategy that is high risks but with big pay offs.

"singles" is to advance to 1st base, instead of trying for a homerun [all three bases] at once, in that it's a safer, technical way to reach the goal of getting to homebase and scoring, by filling up all bases, one batter at a time, so that the last batter will easily send someone home [i.e. by rotation]. Maybe it's like getting a 'corner kick' in soccer by hitting the ball off the other player when you see you cannot score a goal: safe and easy to do, and it sets you up for the next step which might get you a goal. So, a short term strategy that adds up in the end.
