The forward end of the tail skid is mounted to the fuselage at a pivot. The cartridge assembly secures the aft section of the skid to the fuselage. The fairing provides an enclosure for the actual tail skid structure. The cartridge assembly consists of a crushable honeycomb material. When the tail skid strikes the runway the skid moves upward and the honeycomb material crushes. The amount of crushing that has occurred in the cartridge can be observed by viewing the cartridge warning decal at the aft end of the tail skid assembly. The tail skid is serviceable when the cartridge warning decal shows both green and red. As the cartridge is crushed, a portion of the green will disappear from view. When the warning decal is all red, the cartridge must be replaced. When performing a preflight exterior inspection, the tail skid should be inspected for damage. The cartridge assembly should be replaced if the cartridge warning decal is all red.
