Creio que em "paciente" já está implícito que é uma pessoa internada. Eu traduziria como "estudo em pacientes", ou "estudo prático" (pois em sendo em pacientes, é prático, não teórico).
Só uma idéia...

Reformulando a primeira frase (por influência de Alexandra):
Salvo informações que indiquem alguma importância em se indicar "in-patient" como um paciente internado e de diferenciá-lo dos pacientes não internados, creio que não há necessidade de dizer "paciente internado". Não sei se, no texto em questão, o "in-patient study" das técnicas de fisioterapia está voltado apenas para pacientes internados, como a Alexandra sugeriu, ou se, como sugeri, possa "in-patient" se referir a algo prático (não-teórico).
Enfim, foi só uma possibilidade que me passou pela cabeça e achei interessante colocá-la, já que outros não pensaram nela.
Tanto foi só uma idéia que só a coloquei como referência. :) :) :)

neutral  Alexandra Gouveia: Felida, permita-me discordar. Repare que se faz a distinção de in-patient (paciente hospitalizado/internado) e existe o termo out-patient (paciente de consulta externa/em ambulatório).
