In case you didn't know, the expression 'to be on the outside looking in' is a fairly standard one in English, modified slightly here.

Of course the key point to get across in your re-phrasing is that these people are being 'left out'

Asker: je suis d'accord en ce qui concerne le mort "piege", c'est pour cela que je mentionnais ma marge d'adaptation. alors que dire? exclus? marginalise?

neutral  Tony M: Totally agree with your comment about 'piégé', but I'm worried that even 'figurants' do have SOME rôle to play, where as these people are excluded as just 'onlookers'
