French term or phrase: règles de déontologie sur internet
Hi

This is from a set of competition rules for a website.

"La participation au jeu implique l'acceptation du présent règlement et des règles de déontologie en vigueur sur internet (étiquette et charte de bonnes conduites)."

I was toying with "good conduct of Internet users" until I saw the part in brackets. Now I'm stumped. To be frank I wasn't aware that these rules existed but it seems in France at least they do. I found this for example:

"La coopération de tous, professionnels et utilisateurs d'Internet, pour fixer les règles de déontologie d'Internet est la condition d'une action efficace," exposait cependant Michèle Alliot-Marie dans une récente allocution. "Nous nous sommes mis d'accord : l'accès aux sites à caractère pédopornographique sera bloqué en France. D'autres démocraties l'ont fait. La France ne devait plus attendre."

Thanks for your help!

Maybe something short like this (I haven't seen it in any of the other answerers' supporting material, but apologies if I've overlooked it).

I thought about "netiquette", but that might not be suitable for a competition site (more to do with e-mail, blogs etc.)

rules of professional ethics applicable to the Internet

Explanation:
In any case, "professional ethics" is how I often translate "déontologie". (I didn't know there was a set of rules applicable to the Internet either! But then again, this is France, where there is a rule for everything!)

I see your point, Sandra. Strictly speaking, i don't think you can separate the idea of "professional" from "la déontologie". However, you may decide to adapt it to your context by just referring to "ethical rules".

Asker: Thanks Rob - that is a good way to translate "déontologie" although would it apply here as it refers not to professionals but your average Joe and Joan logging on to enter the competition?

Yes, but your phrase says

....en vigueur..

so there must be some formal/official set of ethics

The phrase in French is pretty formal and I don't really see how you can "mess about with it" :-)
