Outro conceito é o de mandonismo. Este não deve ser utilizado para designar as especificidades do coronelismo. O mandonismo não é um sistema, não forma um complexo político como o coronelismo. Mas, antes, designa uma característica da política brasileira, que existe desde tempos remotos do Brasil Colônia, sobrevivendo ainda nos dias de hoje em certas regiões mais isoladas do país.
Segundo o historiador José Murilo de Carvalho: “O mandão, o potentado, o chefe, ou mesmo o coronel como indivíduo, é aquele quem em função do controle de algum recurso estratégico, em geral a posse de terra, exerce sobre a população um domínio pessoal e arbitrário que a impede de ter livre acesso ao mercado e à sociedade política.”

bossism (VEJA NOTA)


Explanation:
Acabei descobrindo que na história política americana já existiu algo chamado "bossism". Dê uma olhada nesse link: http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Bossism. Parece-me que há semelhanças entre esse "bossism" e o que no Brasil se chamou "coronelismo". De "mandonismo" nunca tinha ouvido falar. De qualquer forma, acho que seria necessário pesquisar um pouco para determinar se "bossism" poderia ser usado ou se poderia no máximo ser mencionado como uma referência.

Na verdade, "bossism" pode ser utilizado num sentido mais genérico também. Nesse caso, significa "the domination of a political organization by a boss". Então acho que, no final das contas, poderia de fato servir para traduzir "mandonismo". Basta olhar em http://www.thefreedictionary.com/BOSSISM.
