agree  SJLD: or simply the mesentery, which by definition is a fan-like structure

mesenteric membrane

Explanation:
or simply mesentery (mesenterium)

The mesentery has a fan-shape form (because of its folds): this is why it is described this way in the source text....but it seems unusual in English.
(still, very few hits about mesenteric fan).

If you want to stay closer to the source text, another option could be:
fan-shape/fan-type mesentery

Mesentery: The membranes, or one of the membranes (consisting of a fold of the peritoneum and inclosed tissues), which connect the intestines and their appendages with the dorsal wall of the abdominal cavity.

agree  SJLD: yes, as I just commented to Maria Elisa - I wouldn't use fan-shape or fan-type though - maybe "fan of the mesentery"

-> thanks! I meant "fan-shaped"...it's descriptive, but sometimes used

neutral  Joseph Tein: I don't know enough to agree conclusively with this ... but it's nice to have you physicians out there to help us! :) // And tonight -- 14 June 2010 -- I NEEDED this! Grazie di nuovo :)
