I don't really understand what is going on with ｹｰﾌﾞﾙ操作. Is the thief destroying the door lock/trunk and tampering with some cable inside the vehicle? Or is the thief somehow using a cable to do something else? Does anybody know what is mechanically going on here? Thanks.

Explanation:
I think that it means they use some type of "cable", but it could be something like a wire hanger worked out to be a type of a hook, to get the car unlocked after inserting it through the broken door lock, or through a gap in the car window. I am assuming that "breaking the door lock" means they physically yang off the handle or something, which doesn't get the door open, but will give them access to a whole in which to stick the "cable" in in order to jimmy it open.

At first I thought it meant that they are manipulating the vehicle's wires (cables) after accessing them by either breaking the door lock, or getting in from a gap in the car door or car window - but I changed my mind.

... Not that I have specailized knowledge about breaking into cars... Not at all... Really...

Explanation:
I don't have specialized knowledge either, (ほんと), but having called AAA (American Automobile Association) or asked a policemen in the past when I was locked out - this is a pre-alarm era - I think this refers to a door-lock cable, which is connected to シリコンノブ (the knob that pops up when the car is unlocked) to cotrol lock/unlock mechanism. Well, I've seen someone with a hanger to .....

So, I go for Harvey's first instinct. Instead of using a wire, the thief manupilates a door-lock cable and unlocks using whatever available.

hotwiring


Explanation:
I might be wrong (I don't even own a car), but the first thing that popped into my head was hotwiring - starting the engine by short-circuiting the ignition. You know that scene from almost every action movie when someone rips a bunch of wires from underneath the steering wheel and then strikes two of them together, some sparks fly and the car starts? That's hotwiring.

Still, while it _could_ be valid for the first example (hotwiring a car after the lock has been destroyed), the second one disproves my theory - I can't imagine anyone hotwiring a car through the space between the door and the glass...

After checking some more sources, it appears that my answer indeed doesn't hold water - I think what ｹｰﾌﾞﾙ操作 might refer to in stead is using a wire with a little hook/loop at the end to lift the door locking pin. I can imagine this being done through a broken lock hole (but through the trunk?) or using the window not closed all the way up...
