Fenomene de acest gen apar o dată la doi-trei ani şi sunt provocate de ratele de mutaţie ridicate ale virusurilor. Epidemiile reapar deoarece virusul suferă mutaţii în învelişul de proteine în care se ataşează anticorpii.
