French term or phrase: A travers des vidéos que l’on s’associe au sport, ou au cinéma,
This is describing the artistic work of a photographer/creator of action shots. I just cant get my head round this phrase (or am I just going mad?) It is in the last paragraph and sums up the photographer's recent work. here is the whole sentence:
'A travers des vidéos que l’on s’associe au sport, ou au cinéma, dans un premier temps, XXX nous parle du corps.'
I think they are trying to say that the artist uses a combination of film and sport but that doesnt seem to fit in with the construction of the sentence....Help!

Bit of a stab, I'm afraid. I was wondering if you could get away with shots as a general term?

Many thanks, Tony and everyone else- The whole passage was full of odd phrases and oddly place punctuation..I almost wondered if it was a back translation!

Asker: yes, they are artistic portrayals in their own right

neutral  Tony M: Snag is, John, I think these 'vidéos' are actual programmes in their own right, and not merely 'video footage'

by means of videos that one initially associates with sport or the cinema

Explanation:
I agree, Cervin! I can't quite see how that "on s'associe à..." fits in there — the construction with 'se' seems odd, at least to me as a non-native French speaker; it feels as if either the 'que' or the 'se' is wrong... So I'm assuming the 'se' is a true reflexive here, and it means that viewers 'make the association for themselves': "at first sight, we associate these videos with sport, but really, they are studies of the human body..."? [think 'Dieux du Stade' calendar!]

Better re-word it, though, to make it a lot less clunky!

Asker: Thanks-you have confirmed what I thought and I will go and ponder! The whole passage has had rather odd word combinations and structures but I have managed to sort those out --well, more or less!!

Whether one is from the world of sport or cinema, XXX's videos ...

Explanation:
I think the crucial problem here is "que l’on s’associe ". As I read it, "on" here is the viewer of the videos which speak about the body, to that viewer, whether they are from the world of sport or that of cinema. A comma before the "que" might have helped.
I have turned the phrase around, because it seems more natural that way in English.

neutral  Tony M: Interesting alternative reading, but I think the 'que' here is a pronoun and very definitely refers to the preceding 'vidéos'
