Nog steeds uit de algemene bepalingen van mijn contract. Nu het kopje Time. Dit is de hele paragraaf:

'Time'
Time will be of the essence.

Dat tijd essentieel is lijkt me duidelijk. Of wordt hier iets anders bedoeld (en moet ik het anders vertalen)? Ik begrijp eigenlijk niet waarom het zo in een contract staat.

Ik kwam deze constructie onlangs zelf ook tegen in een overeenkomst. Het komt erop neer dat de afgesproken leveringsdatum/-termijn een essentiële voorwaarde van de overeenkomst is, en dat de schending van deze datum/termijn contractbreuk betekent.
