Japanese term or phrase: おそるべし
I'm guessing at this point...does it mean something along the lines of 'should be afraid'?
おそるべし'yamada', where X here is a name of someone (I used yamada as an example). What does it mean altogether?
foureyes
English translation:awesome
Explanation:
「おそるべし」は対象となる人(例えばYamadaさん)が本当に怖い訳ではなく、その人に対してどこか畏敬の念を持って称えるニュアンスがあると思います。

プログレッシブ和英中辞典にこんな文例があります。用法として近いのではないでしょうか。
・ 彼こそ真に恐るべき天才だ
He is truly an awesome genius.

should be afraid

Explanation:
'べし' means the same as 'べき', 'べき' is standard or colloquial Japanese and 'べし' is literary or poetic. Same meaning, slightly different word. HTH.

agree  casey: That would be my guess, too. Fearsome (as in "fearsome competitor") should also fit. I don't think it's a negative descriptor.

agree  Duncan Adam: Seems the safest word to me. By the way, my top tip for the day is that all translators should spend 10 hours on a crash course in classical/pre-modern Japanese. It surprises me how often very ordinary pre-modern grammar turns up in Kudoz questions. :-)

not to be underestimated

Explanation:
見くびることのできない、油断ならない、侮れない、侮りがたい、という意味だと思いますので、
"not to be underestimated" ではいかがでしょうか。
