French term or phrase: capitalisation des expériences
Dans le domaine humanitaire, le concept de capitaliser les expériences est très utilisé. En anglais, on dirait plutôt "to capitalise on experience". So far, so good, mais lorsqu'il s'agit d'une équipe de capitalisation des expériences ou la capitalisation transversale, la traduction se corse.

Voici différentes façons d'exprimer ce concept dans un même paragraphe:

Au XXX, le Programme Dialogue Citoyen (PDC) s’est inscrit dans un processus de capitalisation de son expérience qui s’est déroulé comme
suit :

- émergence d’un besoin interne de capitaliser les expériences du PDC en vue de les rendre partageables,

- décision collective des chefs de file de capitaliser les expériences en cours,

- présentation et discussion sur les termes de référence sur la capitalisation transversale des PCPA,

- mise en place d’une équipe de capitalisation des expériences,

- appui d’une personne ressource externe à l’équipe de capitalisation,

- accord sur la méthodologie et production des outils de collecte des informations,

- amorce de la collecte des informations (recherche documentaire, interviews),

- mobilisation d’un formateur du CIEDEL par le CFSI pour assurer la formation de l’équipe de capitalisation,

- production d’un document sur les expériences du PDC,

- amendements et orientations du formateur sur le document,

- séances de travail de l’équipe pour la prise en compte des observations du formateur,

- appui complémentaire du formateur du CIEDEL à l’équipe de capitalisation,

- préparation et présentation des expériences capitalisées au séminaire de capitalisation transversale des PCPA,

- approfondissement de la capitalisation au sein de l’équipe.


"Experience capitalisation" est utilisé par les Suisses et les Belges, mais c'est évident qu'il s'agit d'une traduction. Ce concept doit exister en anglais, mais le terme doit être différent. Dans certains documents des Nations Unies, je trouve l'idée de "case studies" mais elle me semble moins précises.

Asker: "Consolidation of experience" rather than "consolidation of experiences" would appear more correct to me. This could have been a solution but the authors consider that consolidation does not convey the same meaning as "capitalisation". In the end, they preferred my suggestion of "experience building" based on "capacity building".

I don't personally like the term because of its financial aspect. However, it is generally used and accepted as part of "management-speak" and, therefore, I use it too. It is used about both pooling knowledge and capitalising upon experience. The basic idea is that the organisation acts as the knowledge bank of its personnel, so everybody contributes and nobody is indispensible. This can, of course, be seen altruistically or in the light of such cynical thoughts as: the company can bank the skills, knowledge and experience of their staff and then freely sack them.

neutral  Rosemary Kneipp: Thank you for your explanation. I now see how it can be used. In my context however, as there are no companies nor usually any employed staff, and the idea is to create dialogue between all the programme members, it doesn't appear appropriate.
