La frase deriva da un’usanza in vigore nella religione ebraica, ma che si riscontra anche in altre religioni. Durante il giorno dell’espiazione (kippur) il gran sacerdote caricava simbolicamente tutti i peccati commessi dalla comunità addosso ad un capro, che poi veniva liberato nel deserto per non fare più ritorno. Presso gli Assiri e Babilonesi il male veniva trasferito dall’uomo all’acqua o ad un’immagine. Nell’antica Grecia, per scongiurare il pericolo della fame, si sceglieva uno schiavo che simboleggiava la fame stessa e lo si cacciava a vergate dalla città.
