I posted because you wouldn't talk about a relationship of work in English but of either just a job or an employment contract depending on the context. I agree fully with what Mara says in the ask the asker section. As free lance tranlsator who does not have a "rapporto subordinato, coordinato e continuativo" with any one client I am obliged to have a VAT number. This concept recurs many times in Italian labour law and with "flexible" work contracts has become much more frequet in the legislation.
