French term or phrase: ville authentique

Can't put my finger on what native English speakers might say.

'Authentic town/city' only seems to appear as translations.

This particular town is Saint Jean de Luz (but I don't suppose that's very important).
Thanks for any authentic sounding suggestions.

Just an alternative to Nora's traditional/typical (both of which I agree with) - in case you wanted to keep the "authentic" idea.

Explanation:
Based on the context given in your notes, I think "traditional" would be appropriate. Also, if you go to the link provided, you will see that this particular town is indeed situated in a traditional part of the Basque Country.

Explanation:
I think that 'typical' covers the idea of it being the 'real thing' without suggesting that there's some kind of film-set, fake town down the road.

It's nice in the sentence, as it admits that it is just like any other town in the area --- but better, because it has a particularly rich history behind it.
