French term or phrase: racleur de surface
In my context, this device is used at a water treatment plant to skim grease off of the surface of water during treatment. I know that my client prefers to translate "racleur" as "scraper" when the device is on the bottom of the cleaning tank, but it seems odd to call it a scraper here where it is used on the surface more as a "skimmer". Has anyone seen the "racleur de surface" referred to authoritatively in English anywhere? Many thanks.

skimmer
Explanation:
skimmer paddle
scum skimmer
float skimmer
oil skimmer

example: Flotation of Waste
The IWWS method of mixing chemistry, bubbles and wastewater produces large buoyant particles (floc) that rise quickly to the top of the separation tank The waste particles form a "float" on top of the tank. Skimmer paddles move the float off into the attached sludge holding tank. The clean effluent flows into an integral holding tank.

Explanation:
sounds odd also in FR.

termium:
Primary settling tanks are equipped with bottom scrapers for the deposited sludge and surface scrapers to remove floating matter which collects on the surface.

agree  chris collister: Surface scraper sounds OK. When it comes to effluent treatment, my knowledge has merely scraped the surface...

agree  Bourth (X): The Degrémont water treatment glossary gives "surface skimmer" for "racleur de surface"

agree  Kari Foster: But re. Bourth's glossary term: how could you skim anything _other_ than a surface??
