I can't make out what this means, particularly "précédé" in this context. I thought it could have been in the sense of "pre-dated", but then I don't see how degrees enter into it.

find a picture of the cathedral and see what are they trying to depict. i am not going too dip into the whole translation, but don't settle for stairs because it can be levels instead! good luck.
