Explanation:
神仏仏閣に限らず、己れの記憶の奥底にある「日本的なるもの」を呼び起こさせるモノが何を意味しているか日本人としてピンと来ます。そして、小生であれば新渡戸稲造博士の著された『武士道』の原書(英文)にあるサブタイトル的な表現、「The soul of Japan」を候補の一つに入れたいと思います。ただ、『Bushido: The soul of Japan』とあるように、Bushido=the soul of Japanというイメージが強すぎる嫌いがありますが…。

ちなみに、「The soul of Japan」という表現は、想像するに新渡戸博士が考えついた英文ではないような気がします。多分、新渡戸博士の米国人妻(メリー・エルキントン)が英訳したもののような気がします。斯様に、『Bushido: The soul of Japan』は新渡戸夫妻の“結晶”であり、現存している博士が書いた英語の原稿には、メリーによる真っ赤になるほどの朱入れがしてあります。
