English term or phrase: willed adjustment
The faithful who doubt adhere to Pascal’s wager: that if I believe and my believing is in vain, I have lost nothing. But, so the thought extends itself, if it is not in vain… This may not make the waiting much easier. And yet the faith, the need to give meaning to a life, may be inextinguishable: like the darkened but enduring visage of the redeemer in Christ of Chartres (2005), a photograph that, with Martin’s characteristic economy, turns simple technique – apparent underexposure – into a weighty metaphor.
Much of Martin’s work feels like a willed adjustment to time’s inviolable constraints. What’s The Time? (2008), for example, proposes an inward model of measurement. A looped sound work, it features a sparse dialogue between a man – Martin – and a woman. She’s very insistent: “What’s the time?” she asks, her voice faintly fringed with anxiety. But he’s insistent too, and even more laconic.
