Появилось оно в научном обиходе еще в 18 веке благодаря Хорасу Волполу (Horace Walpole 1717-1797), который в одном из своих писем 28 января 1754 года употребил это выражение для обозначения случайного счастливого неожиданного открытия. Связано слово с цейлонской сказкой "Три принца из Серендипа" (герои сказки как раз и совершали "серендипические открытия" во время своих странствий), а Серендип - древнее название Шри Ланки (Цейлона).

neutral  Libero_Lang_Lab: I think this is wrong. Serindip is okay - not a back translation - there are abundant references to it on English language sites. Serendipitous approximation sounds more like a poetic description than the name of a specific law/algorithem
