I guess the best thing to do is compare the images and see if they match - if so google lists more than 2000 hits for "giardino formale" and there are more than 1800 in Yahoo..... Not as popular as the English expression, and yet it does exist in Italian.

agree  ste mar: In italiano si usa il termine formale riferito a un giardino per indicare che segue un progetto preciso in cui dominano le forme geometriche, a differenza di quello inglese, più "naturale". Poi il giardino formale può essere all'italiana o alla francese.
