In the subject of weight and food, all our most pressing concerns converge: genetics versus environment, free will versus determinism, celebrity and the **cult of the image**.

  -> thanks Patrice!

neutral  ormiston: cult of THE image does not sound English to me. I agree the article is very nicely written but still feel that the the sounds odd
48 mins
-> But it is English - it's mentioned on various English sites and my note above is taken from a reputable national newspaper!

neutral  Jim Tucker (X): ultimately I agree that this could work - just want to point out that the context you quote above is specifically in reference to a *celebrity's* image (might not be exclusively physical, for example)// It probably says that even if I don't read it.
17 hrs
-> if you read the article,it's about the desire to be thin (therefore related to appearance), not about people wanting to look like celebrities!!

obsession with outward appearance

Explanation:
I presume this is from the same text as the other posting. I know this has a slightly critical slant but it might fit the tone.....

disagree  John Cutler: This is a question about social science not religion. Image worship sounds like something pagans would do, jajajaj
1 hr
-> I think the term can well be applied here also, I see nothing wrong with that!

agree  Ana L Fazio-Kroll: Henry, I think you are "right on the money". And I would even say "SELF-WORSHIP". La palabra "culto" es ya una expresion religiosa, y worship es la traduccion que mas se le acerca. Saludos!
3 hrs
-> Gracias, Laura. "Self-worship" is the idea.

neutral  ormiston: agree with John that in EN this sounds like kneeling before images
19 hrs
-> That is sort of the idea, people look at it differently but I feel it is quite appropriate.

cult of body image/body image cult

Explanation:
That's the way I've usually come accross the term to refer to body (fat, thin) or beauty (cult of beauty)... the term includes the "everything" in the body, the whole appeareance.

Just another idea.
