A software modem starts with the phone connector on your desktop or notebook computer. This means that you connect the phone line directly to the PC. The audible data signal is then converted by your PC's own hardware into data, performing the task that a traditional modem on your desk would.

So, (since it can't be those above, and since we don't need a hardware connector since software) I can only see it as a software (virtual) phone, with its interface.
This way, the phone connector would be this "interface appearing on desktop" when you click on some "phone connector" icon.

La difficulté réside dans l'appellation élidée de l'interface de connection en "connecteur téléphonique", terme hardware qui est ambigu dans le cas d'un software.
En générale, tous ces logiciels fax/modem/phone virtuel emploient plutôt le terme "interface de connexion".
