metal/surface expulsion / whiskers Explanation: Isn't this what you are describing? http://www.romanmfg.com/weldhelp/issues/expuls.htm "Definition Expulsion is the forceful ejection of molten metal from the weld. Severe expulsion may eject enough material to create a through-hole in the workpiece, commonly termed "burn through"." A list of weld quality defects can be found here: http://www.wildefea.co.uk/training/courses/courses81/ This source includes Surface Expulsion as one thing to look for when checking welds and talks about whiskers, also known as burrs. Those are the hard bits: "Spikes of solidified expulsion extending from the circumference of a weld are called whiskers or burrs and are also to be avoided." -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2008-01-17 14:13:29 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Thanks!
