ad esempio si parla di effettuare un rastreo de las llamadas telefonicas
o rastreo de los vuelos que han pasado tal dia por tal aeropuerto

Explanation:
I sensi supposti da te e dai colleghi sono tutti esatti, ma esiste in anche in italiano il termine rastrellare, nonchè il sostantivo rastrellamento- che, pur non essedo delle bellissime parole, a mio giudizio sarebbe giusto usare, dato che hanno il medesimo significato (naturalmente figurato) di rastreo/rastrear: vedi gli esempi dati dal Garzanti nel senso di: "sottoporre a controlli militari o di polizia: "fu arrestato da un rastrellamento della polizia" o "rastrellare un territorio nemico", etc... disagree  Maura Affinita: rastrellare sarebbe "rastrillar", che non è seguire la traccia ma "sottoporre una zona a controlli sistematici per eliminare forze nemiche residue"(Zingarelli)

  -> sì lo avevo visto: "rastrellare" in spagnolo si dice prima di tutto "rastrillar", ma sia il contesto di Laura, che i vecchi dizionari (es. Frisoni) dicono che anche Rastrear vuol dire Rastrellare nel senso di "sottopore a controlli militari o di polizia"
