Lots of Ghits for these.

This is a very standard term in the investment world.

You could also get away with "point of reference", but I prefer "benchmark."

I could be barking up the wrong tree but I feel that benchmarks is too specific for this. Benchmarks in finance are set standards of measurement

Given it's meaning in finance I think it's best to avoid it in the general sense. Also if it was a set standard, I can't see analysts being able to be 'discreet' about them. Wouldn't it be open knowledge?

I think you need something more general like pointers, markers, guides, or points of reference. Guidance would do even.
