Bei einem Umsteuermanöver wird die Drehrichtung des Propellers geändert. Macht das Schiff Fahrt durchs Wasser, wird der ausgekuppelte Propeller durch das vorbeiströmende Wasser angetrieben. Diese Propellerdrehung verstärkt das "Rückmoment".

Der Motor kann das "Rückmoment" beim Umsteuern nur bis zu einer bestimmten Schiffsgeschwindigkeit aufbringen. Die Steuerung muss deshalb so eingestellt werden, dass der Motor nach dem Wiedereinkuppeln in die andere Drehrichtung nicht abgewürgt wird.
