Marketing - Wine / Oenology / Viticulture / special collection for Y2K
French term or phrase: mariant l’éphémère et le pérenne
This appears in a marketing manager’s CV, describing a project she worked on:

Cuvée exceptionnelle (6 grands crus de chardonnay et grandes années millésimées) conçue par XXX pour célébrer le passage à l'an 2000. Mariant l'éphémère et le pérenne XXX à l'idée d'habiller son offre d'une cage en métal argenté dessiné et réalisée par l'Orfèvre Christofle. Série limitée et numérotée.

My creative juices are running dry (perhaps I could use some of this vintage chardonnay!). Any ideas for “mariant l’éphémère et le pérenne”? Thanks in advance!

a permanent reminder of the vintage

Explanation:
Not word for word, but giving the idea expressed I'd say something along the lines of:

"In order to leave (the customer with) a permanent reminder of the vintage, XXX was inspired to......"

(I'm assuming, of course that "XXX à l'idée" is a typo for "XXX a l'idée" - otherwise I don't see how the sentence works grammatically at all).

Hopefully the cage opens - or else it will be more than a suggestion of perpetuity!

Or since we don't want to imply, as Tony points out, that their wine is just a fleeting pleasure, "To suggest both a rare moment and eternity".

Explanation:
I've been trying to start off by working out what they mean by this ephemeral / perennial bit — are they simply trying to say that even once you've guzzled down the plonk, you'll still have the nice box to enjoy? I have a sneaky feeling that is really what they mean...

This is one of the reasons I have some reservations about 'fleeting', since although that is of course a true synonym for 'ephemeral', I just can't help thinking they wouldn't like to think of 'dégustation' of their fine cru being regarded as quite such a fleeting pleasure...

I shall be so interested to see what others think about this!

Oh yes, SKT, I TOTALLY agree that in a wine-TASTING context, 'fleeting' is an entirely appropriate term to use; I just feel faintly uneasy about it as applied to the actual PRODUCT (if that's indeed what they mean). If as I read it the 'éphémère' relates to the experience of enjoying their fine wine, I just feel that 'fleeting' somehow suggests it won't last very long / will be over all too quickly — which doesn't seem to me to feel quite right; surely they'd want people to think "If you buy our wine, you're going to enjoy a long, pleasurable moment drinking it" — in such a context, 'fleeting' seems to me to suggest 'downing it in one'.

Do you see what I mean? It's by no means a strong objection, just a faint unease...

agree  Mark Nathan: I agree that it boils down to a nice box, but since they are French we are probably supposed to credit them with some sort of higher existential notions about Y2K.// I made sure I upgraded well before the event.

-> Thanks, Mark! I wonder if they had Y2K compatibility issues with cork-screws...?

agree  Bourth (X): Right about the box. Was it Pooh who had useful pots for keeping things in?

making the instant eternal

Explanation:
Need it matter WHICH instant - when the wine is drunk, when it is offered as a gift, etc. - is concerned?

Whichever instant it is, it will live on as a memory in the horrid silver dust-gathering cagey thingy, be it empty or still full with a full bottle of wine.

Tony, this is the fleeting enjoyment of a pleasurable experience. Are'nt most pleasures fleeting? The container will be the permanent reminder of that pleasurable moment
