From the early 1960s there was growing national control of the communist parties in the constituent republics and the emergence of entrenched local elites in their governments. It was this growing nationalism, compounded by the attempt to have multi-candidate elections, that was to bring down the Soviet Union.

Т.к. АЛЬТЕРНАТИВНЫЙ [тэ], -ая, -ое; -вен, -вна. 1. см. альтернатива. 2. Противопоставленный другому и его исключающий. А. проект. Альтернативная служба (у военнообязанных: служба на гражданских объектах, заменяющая воинскую, строевую). || сущ. альтернативность, -и, ж. - т.е. получается, что слово неоднозначное.
