Western blotting 是在从混合蛋白质中检测微量特定蛋白质的一种方法。简单、通俗地说就是先用凝胶电泳方法分离蛋白质，并保留电泳区带的原状，然后将其转移到滤膜上，再以带有放射性同位素的特定抗体（即所谓探针）进行检测，也就是利用探针与特定蛋白质结合的特性检测该蛋白质。探针与特定蛋白质结合后，因其上有放射性同位素可通过照相的方法使其显示；如不能结合将被洗掉。所谓RE-PROP，也就是将膜上蛋白质-探针结合体的探针剥离掉后，再用探针检测一次，以再次分析和改正不满意的试验，或作为对照。
