This plane crash took place almost exactly two months to the day after 9/11 in NYC and at the same time in the morning that the first Twin Tower was hit.

Context: "C'est la panique a New York, tout le monde dit que c'est un coup de Ben Laden et c'est encore American Airlines qui **prend dans la tronche**, decidement.""

I find "is taking it on the chin" rather trite due to the enormity of the whole situation (247 people died in the crash, anyway).

Hope you all have some better suggestions.

Explanation:
The meaning is definitely not "take it on the chin", which implies manly acceptance of violence.

"le prendre dans la tronche" simply means "get hit".

"Bear the brunt of it" might work too, though that too implies a measure of testicular fortitude, and, of course, it was those killed who really bore the brunt of it.
