This is a term used often in a long text about relaunching the park concept in Italy. Sample sentence:

"[dovremmo] coordinare e riorientare le nostre forze avendo il coraggio di entrare nel circo mediatico e di ritagliarci lo spazio che ci spetta come diritto e come dovere..."

Obviously, there's "media circus" in English, but it strikes me as inappropriate in this text because it is essential pejorative (likewise, "media frenzy"). In the text, they're basically talking about using the media the way other advertisers of products do, instead of keeping to the "traditional" path in which "educational and cultural" institutions like reserves and parks don't vie for public attention via the traditional mass media.

Anyone have any good ideas? Thanks!

The word is used in exactly the same way in both languages and probably originated in English. I don't see you have any alternative.

Asker: Of course I have a choice: I'm the writer of the translation. I understand that the connotation is not entirely positive, but "media circus" is decidedly perjorative in English and I'm not going to use it. Consider the difference between "media whirl" and "media frenzy," e.g. They need courage because it's fast-moving, difficult to come to grips with, etc., not because it's exaggerated or ridiculous (which is the shading of media circus).

Asker: Dunno who Wendy is, Jane, but you're just going to have to take my word for it that, in this text, the writers don't mean what we mean by "media circus."
