Katastrophentheorie; katastrophenbedingte geologische Prozesse
Explanation:
The following definition of "catastrophism" is from the Macquarie Dictionary & supports Uschi's explanation:
"n. Geol. the doctrine that certain vast geological changes in the earth's history were caused by catastrophes rather than gradual evolutionary processes."

Apparently the term "Katastrophentheorie" is used to describe this school of thought in general - see web page reference below which explains the history of the term in some detail.

With regards to the proper translation in the geological context, I'm not sure either. Maybe "katastrophenbedingte geologische Prozesse"??

katastrophale Geologie

Explanation:
is the direct translation, but it would make considerably more sense if it was GEOLOGIAL CATASTROPH = geologische Katastrophe

aber natuerlich: ein katastrophaler geologischer Zustand koennte zu einer geologischen Katastrophe fuehren.

Katastrophale Geologie

Explanation:
I am not sure about the translation, but I found the following information on this site below, hope it helps, Bram

1. Analysis of Plate Tectonics by Newtonian Mechanics. Catastrophic Geology
Thesis of this my work was accepted to 31st International Geological Congress held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 6-17 August, 2000 (but I could not attend the conference due to absence of money for ticket to Brazil).
I also talked this report on Russian conference \"Geodynamics and technogenesis\" held in Yaroslavl on 12-15 September 2000 and on 7th International conference of undergraduate and postgraduate students on fundamental sciences \"Lomonosov-2000\", which was in Moscow State University from 12 to 15 April 2000. Thesis is published in Russian in book of thesises:
Justin Chashihin, Analysis of theory of plate tectonics by Newtonian mechanics, in: Proc. of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student International Conference on Fundamental Sciences \"Lomonosov\", Issue 4 (Moscow University Press, Moscow, 2000) p. 202
This full article describes analysis of theory of plate tectonics by Newtonian mechanics, which shows that continents drifted at friction deceleration and that the drift and quick split were caused by a typical small asteroid. Laws of physics prove that the drift dured about several HOURS, but not 200 million years! The following articles also discuss impact of asteroid on Earth in region of Mexican bay:
C.Marchal, Earth\'s polar displacements of large amplitude: a possible mechanism, Bulletin du Museum national d\'Histoire naturelle, Paris, 4e ser., t.18, 1996, section C, Nos. 2-3, pp. 517-554
P.Debrabant et al, The imprint of the Chixulub asteroid impact in clay minerals from the Cretacerous/Tertiary boundary in Guatemala, Bull. Soc. geol. France, 1999, t. 170, no.5, pp. 643-660
This catastrophic geology well correlates with observations of eruption of mount St.Helen\'s and fundamental experiments in stratification:
Guy Berthault, \"Experiments on Lamination of Sediments\", Comptes Rendus Acad. Sciences Paris, t. 303, Serie II, No.17 (1986) pp 1569-1574
Guy Berthault, \"Sedimentation of a heterogranular mixture. Experimental lamination in still and running water\" , Comptes Rendus Acad. Sciences Paris, t. 306, Serie II, No.11 (1988) pp 717-724
Fundamental experiments in stratification prove quick formation of strata and show that the geological time-scale is constructed on invalidated principles. See also: http://geology.ref.ac/berthault
Fundamental experiments in stratification were presented at conferences:
French national congress on sedimentology, 1993
International congress on sedimentology, 1994
European congress on sedimentology, 1995
Powders and Grains Conference, USA, 1997
French geologist, Guy Berthault, member of French Geological association and of French Sedimentology association, told me in a personal letter about this my article the following:
\"You are right to observe that the assumption that continents drifted friction force at constant velocity contradict the principle of inertia ..., and it proves that continents drifted at friction deceleration.
That quick split was caused by a typical small asteroid... The consequence of quick split were uplift, especially, Himalaya, that according to the herewith article from Christian Marchal, induced Earth\'s polar displacements, which could be the cause of marine transgression that covered continents.\"

Katastrophen-Geologie ???

Explanation:

Katastrophismus

Explanation:
is how this is often simply referred to. It is one of the older geological theories, now incorporated into the body of geological knowledge.
