Zwischenzeitlich hatten die Behörden das Eingreifen des preußischen Militärs veranlasst und die Situation geriet außer Kontrolle. Es wurden elf Menschen (darunter eine Frau) erschossen, weitere 24 schwer verletzt. Die Einheit wich zunächst der mit Knüppeln und Steinen bewehrten Menge, nach dem Eintreffen der Verstärkung wurde der Aufstand am 6. Juni 1844 niedergeschlagen. Zahlreiche Weber wurden verhaftet und zu Zuchthaus, Festungshaft bzw. Peitschenhieben verurteilt.
