Dutch term or phrase: stroom van voren
"De loods wist dat in het kanaal, met de wind schuin van achteren inkomende en **stroom van voren**, het schip veel minder zou verlijeren."

Is it correct to just translate this as "a current in the front" or is there a more technical term for this?

English translation:against the current
Explanation:
the ship was sailing/making way against the current and with the wind abaft/ abaft the beam
or:
straight against the current
or: heading straight into the current

Normally not a very nice situation as the waves get higher, but if the wind is not abeam, then of course the ship will not suffer as much drift as it would otherwise

The original NL version is not very nautical either.
'met ruime wind en recht tegen de stroom in' I would have said...

And verlijeren is leeway, because of the wind - here the writer means 'drift' als in NL as both wind and current are involved. [PPT] PowerPoint-presentatieFormato de archivo: Microsoft Powerpoint - Versión en HTML

agree  Wouter van Kampen: Making way against the current. Het nautische van deze tekst is A OK. Er wordt hier niet gezeild maar gevaren met een tamelijk groot vrachtschip! Leeway is "afvallen" als tegenstelling van "oploeven". Leeway als commando is de opdracht om af te vallen.

-> Leeway - The amount that a ship is blown leeward by the wind. I.e. verlijeren, niet afvallen. ;)
