bowman Explanation: This my take on it: piano = bowman piano assistant = mid bowman ider le piano sous spi = helps the bowman with the spinnaker compare the positions in this link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/sailing/america... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 38 mins (2007-02-21 22:17:12 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- after studying more closely the bbc link: piano = pitman Occupies a central position and controls halyards which hoist and drop sails. piano assistant = mastman Works with pit and bow to hoist and drop sails and control spinnaker pole downwind, swapping it from side to side during gybes. Upwind, he works the primary grinder, trimming and tacking the genoa. During the pre-start he helps the mid-grinder with the mainsail. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 41 mins (2007-02-21 22:20:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- indeed, my first answer was off the top of my head... I'm going to bed, 'night! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 hrs (2007-02-22 09:12:58 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- they are talking about passing the sheet (rope that controls the sail) through probably a block (pulley) or a simple hole in something, this action is called "reeving": "reeve the sheet through the block" for example. I suppose that the guy has to go out on the spinnaker pole if the sheet gets unreeved, ie let go rapidly for some reason :-) |

piano winch operator Explanation: http://www.gitana-team.com/en/gitana_team/trimarans.asp -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 12 hrs (2007-02-22 09:57:58 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- i've double checked this reference, which is in the English press release and I can't find any other instances of it on the web, so I may be wrong. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 12 hrs (2007-02-22 10:04:05 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "Halyard man" I've found a reference to the Piano in Parler marin. |
