bowman

Explanation:
This my take on it:

piano = bowman
piano assistant = mid bowman
ider le piano sous spi = helps the bowman with the spinnaker

compare the positions in this link:

after studying more closely the bbc link:

piano = pitman
Occupies a central position and controls halyards which hoist and drop sails.

piano assistant = mastman
Works with pit and bow to hoist and drop sails and control spinnaker pole downwind, swapping it from side to side during gybes.

Upwind, he works the primary grinder, trimming and tacking the genoa. During the pre-start he helps the mid-grinder with the mainsail.

they are talking about passing the sheet (rope that controls the sail) through probably a block (pulley) or a simple hole in something, this action is called "reeving": "reeve the sheet through the block" for example. I suppose that the guy has to go out on the spinnaker pole if the sheet gets unreeved, ie let go rapidly for some reason :-)

Asker: I thought a "piano" was a pitman ?

Asker: Yes, I've been referring to the BBC website, thanks (it is excellent). However, in my text, I have "piano", "piano assistant" (which I translated as "assistant pitman BTW) and mastman... Not easy!

Asker: Thanks, Dominique, but here, in the headings, "Piano" and "Piano assistant" are definitely positions/crew members as they are listed on a page headed "LES POSTES". Is there such a thing as an "Assistant Pitman"??

Asker: On the subject of the "bowman" (équipier d'avant), they say he "Grimpe en tête de mât pour "hooker" la grand voile et en bout de tangon pour repasser les écoutes de spi si besoin". Any idea what "repasser" means here?

Asker: Thanks, mac!

disagree  Dominique Lelievre: the "piano" is not a crew member but an array of winches, cleats etc which allow the handling of various halyards & sheets from the cockpit. http://www.moniteur-voile.net/forum.php3?id_article=10

i've double checked this reference, which is in the English press release and I can't find any other instances of it on the web, so I may be wrong.

"Halyard man"

I've found a reference to the Piano in Parler marin.

Asker: But what is the "piano assistant's" title in English then, if he helps the "piano winch operator" and the "Piano" (previous heading in the excerpt") has been translated as "bowman"? Help!

Asker: Sorry, correction: "piano" (heading) has been translated as "pitman"

Asker: OK, looks good, but just as an aside, I'm a little nervous of a source that says "racing ARE done" and which mentions a "Swipper" as one of the crew members :)
