Can anyone help with this term? I can find no reference to it on the web.

English translation:flow of the asperities
Explanation:
It means the rough spots can deform a bit to smooth out the surface. Plasma (or ion) nitriding produces a very thin hardened and nitrided layer, though it depends on the base material just how thin and hard the layer is.

Honestly, I can't find much in the way of references to "asperidades" either. I wonder whether this word at least has been "translated" from English - it would be tempting to use "asperidad" for "asperity" wouldn't it?

creep of asperities

Explanation:
Simon & Schuster's dict. says that “asperidades” is the same as “asperezas”, and I did find one ref. to “fluencia de las asperezas”:

“Fluencia” is creep. Ref. for “fluencia” from EuroDicAutom:

fluencia
Reference CSIC

Definition creep is plastic flow of the material under constant stress. creep : plastic deformation which proceeds slowly and continuously when stress is applied at elevated temperatures

It is suspected that the primary mechanism involved is ***creep of asperities*** along the fracture surface which forms an interlocking network.

neutral  BristolTEc: Creep is a process which only really takes place at temperatures above half the absolute melting point of the metal (so for steel around 1800K = 630C) - if your material is at this temperature, creep could be right

disagree  BristolTEc: Ion (plasma) nitriding is carried out at relatively low temperatures. If the part were to get anywhere near melting point (during the process or afterwards) al the nitrogen would diffuse away and there would be no nitrided layer.

-> Quitr right! I went down the wrong track. Your comment would apply to any nitriding, ion or gas.

flow/smoothing of surface irregularities/protuberances

Explanation:
Two French refs in Eurodic for 'asperite', 'rough protuberance' and 'corky scab'.

It is about a nitrided metal working tool, die, mandrel, etc. The surface has tiny irregularities which smooth out due to the pressure of the working action. The protuberances, although a hard nitride compound, assume the ductility of the substrate metal.
