Explanation:
Because if a salaried individual can do the work then it shouldn't be sub-contracted out

For instance, if you are asked to work on a project that is outside your job description, you might say "Ce n'est pas de ma compétence."

agree  HelenG: Yep, that's how I see it...very modest on your 3 score! Could also use remit.

-> Thanks. Actually, in American English, remit is used only as a verb. I only know the noun usage from reading histories of UK radio and TV, which always refer to Channel 4's original "remit."

neutral  French2English: I'm not sure whether it's responsibilities so much as skills here that is meant...isn't it a question of what the staff CAN do rather than what they are MEANT to do?

neutral  Julie Barber: I'd go for skills / ability though, not responsability as it's not the same thing

skills

Explanation:
I prefer to use the term 'skill' to translate 'competence' and here I would put it in the plural. I don't disagree with 'abilities', which can mean almost the same thing, but I would make the distinction that a person might have an 'ability', but not an actual 'skill' - the latter suggesting that they have received the necessary training.

job description

Explanation:
This is obviously related to a unionized organization. The issue is therefore not the real capability of an individual employee, but rather the "job description" that defines the work that "belongs" to the trade in question.
