using the charm of his money to attract women Explanation: In baseball, "fielding a ball" is to catch it. This is not a use of "to field" that I have heard before, but it makes sense in a rather cynical way. |

this gent has gotten used to a lot of female attention Explanation: In my opinion, this man's evident wealth has meant that he has been the recipient of a lot of female interest and has become accustomed to dealing with it. From what we have to go on, I cannot tell if he uses his wealth to attract women, or if some of these women are attracted simply because his wealth is obvious. This man's 'magnetic qualities' may mean that he 'plays the field', that is to say he has or has had many intimate or romatic relationships, but that may be a suggestion too far from the context. All the best, allp. to (manage to) catch Explanation: As Linda says, in baseball, or preferably cricket you will hear cries of "well-fielded". In this context a player manages to catch a ball because he is alert and agile, or just in the right place at the right time (that's usually my experience). In your context he catches women because he is rich and it usually shows. However, and I may be splitting hairs here, I would not say that he necessarily consciously used his wealth to attract the women. Like a lot of other men, he tried to seduce women, but, unlike a lot of men, he regularly succeeded because his wealth showed. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2006-12-07 21:23:54 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- He wore expensive clothes, had a luxurious house etc |
