Although returns may vary significantly in different years, hedge funds have outperformed both the Average Equity Mutual Fund Index and S&P 500 over the past 16 years. There is however a survivorship bias, whereby published results for hedge funds do not include the returns of hedge funds that no longer exist. The proportion of closed hedge funds averaged around 5% a year between 1999 and 2004.
