Whilst it may be possible to identify public and private 'roads', the word 'public' is redundant in connection with 'streets'.

Strassenraum
street space

Explanation:
The fundamental issue that must be addressed in the redesign of a commercial street is how to allocate its space. "Balancing" spaces is a concept that is used to describe allotting room for pedestrian needs - encouraging a lively, active public space - while at the same time maintaining appropriate vehicular space for deliveries, parking, local access, and through movement.

Balancing street spaces is both a design and a management problem, because it can be achieved by making physical changes to a street (as by creating a traffic-free mall or widening sidewalks) and by changing regulations, which control street functions. An example of the latter is a street that may be used in different ways during the course of a day: turned over to pedestrians alone from, say, noon until 2 p.m., with full vehicle access permitted the rest of the day. This flexible approach to street improvements requires active day-to-day management to ensure its success.

Strassenraum
streets

Explanation:

  -> Danke

agree  lindaellen (X): Yes/Ja Thomas, but I would use "on" instead of "in" - it just sounds more natural to my native ears.

  -> Oh ja - 'on public streets', nicht 'in public streets'.

agree  David Moore (X): ON - definitely; "roads" is my personal preference to "streets", but the two are equally common.

  -> Cheers.

agree  Astrid Elke Witte: Genau.

  -> Danke.

neutral  Lancashireman: You've got rid of 'Raum' so how about going one step further and dropping 'public'? It’s good to see that ‘in’ has been replaced by ‘on’. Also wouldn’t you agree that English usage actually prefers '(parking) on street', i.e. as a singular noun?
8 hrs
  -> Not so sure about the sing. (but then again you're the native) - then prbly rather with the article (parking on the street), right?/But anyway, that's the xlatíon of the context example, not the word we are looking for in the first place (Straßenraum)

agree  Thomas Pfann: Eigentlich gefällt mir diese Version recht gut. Insbesondere wenn es um die Unterscheidung von öffentlichen/privaten Parkplätzen und Parken auf der Straße geht.

  -> Thanks, T. Sorry I've run out of space above (255 char limit). IMO ‘on street’ is generic whereas ‘on the street’ is particular to one location, e.g. “Although it may be perfectly legal to park on street that’s no use if there is no room on the street!”
