MRSA (sometimes referred to as the ‘superbug’) stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is a bacterium from the Staphylococcus aureus family.
MRSA will not normally cause an infection in a healthy person. Although it is possible for those outside hospital to become infected, MRSA infections are most common in people who are already in hospital. Those in hospital are more likely to develop MRSA infections because they often have an entry point for the bacteria to get into their body, such as a surgical wound, a catheter, or an intravenous tube.

Resumo:
Introdução: Entre os agentes causadores da infecção nosocomial assume lugar de destaque o Staphylococcus aureus meticilino-resistente (SAMR). Um portador nasal assintomático poderá facilmente transmitir o agente quer directamente quer através do ar, poeiras, secreções e excreções. Uma vez realizada a transmissão, é iniciada a colonização da pele ou mucosa do indivíduo havendo o risco de disseminação bacteriana, principalmente quando há alteração da barreira cutânea-mucosa. Tendo como meta a prevenção da infecção nosocomial torna-se pertinente a utilização constante das normas de precaução universais.

As infecções hospitalares podem ser causadas por vários agentes, não apenas pelo S.aureus. A notação científica de uma espécie (e claro, tb de uma bactéria) deve levar sempre letra maiúscula para o gênero e letra minúscula para a espécie (Ex.: Staphylococcus aureus, Legionella pneumophila., etc.).
